If you love to be creative, art and creativity can be the perfect activities to add to your self care routine! You will need some creative ideas that can inspire you to stay connected with yourself and your innermost thoughts. Luckily, there are plenty of interesting ways you can rejuvenate both mentally and physically that don’t feel like chores but rather provide an artistic outlet to get in touch with your emotions.

In this blog post we will share a few creative self care activities to add to your routine.

Get a Coloring Book

Adult coloring books have been popular for a while, and they are definitely not going anywhere. There are now many different types of coloring books, depending on what you are interested in. You can get gardens and flowers, animals and creatures, or even coloring books with curse words to have a little fun with them. Coloring can be a great stress relief making it a good creative self care activity.

I love drawing personally so I create coloring pages for people to color like these seashell coloring pages.

Try Drawing or Painting

Drawing and painting can be an easy way to be creative and artistic, but also practice self care. Self care doesn’t have any hard or fast rules. It is simply about doing activities that makes you feel good about yourself and can distract you from what is causing you stress and help you spend more time focusing on yourself.

You want to make sure all your time is not spent working, cleaning, or taking care of your kids. You should also have some hobbies and activities you truly enjoy just for yourself.

Do you love drawing or painting? Or maybe you want to try it out to see if you like it. Find a quiet place outside (if you can) or you can even sit with headphones playing your favorite playlist. Grab a sketchbook and some art tools to draw, sketch, or paint as you wish. No worries if you are getting started with drawing or painting, it takes practice but you can do it!

Learn a New Craft

What better way to express your creative side than to learn something brand new? This is the perfect opportunity to get out there and try a new craft or form of art. You don’t have to be naturally artistic to be creative and enjoy any type of creative activity for self care. Doing the activity isn’t the only way to taking better care of yourself, but also in learning how to do it.

Think of some hobbies you always wondered about, like oil painting, making jewelry, crocheting, or even working with clay. These are just examples, you may have other hobbies that you want to try. This is your self care journey so be sure your creative hobby is something have an interest in.

Now think about what you need to do this new craft. I would start with a basic supply list to see if you like it. For example if you want to try crochet, 1 or 2 skeins of yarn and a couple hooks will get you started. If you love it, you will expand your yarn stash (I know this from experience haha!)

You can always find YouTube videos to follow along for most hobbies so you can learn at your pace.

Writing

Not all forms of being creative for self care have to do with art and crafts projects. You can also start writing, which can be very therapeutic for you. This can be anything from writing in a journal to writing short stories or working on a novel.

One good practice to start writing is to set a timer for 8-10 minutes, then just start writing whatever comes to mind. Continue writing without taking a break until the timer goes off.

My first blog was started in 2007 as a hobby. I wasn’t very good at writing then either. I didn’t know what to write about so it was a very cheesy “so this was my day.” But I stuck with it and started this blog along with my food blog and 2 others.

I am not saying you need to blog to write, that is just how I started my writing adventures. Start with a notebook and a pen, nothing fancy. If you find it tough coming up with ideas to write about for 8-10 minutes, how about trying a journal with prompts? We have 30 self love journal prompts to get you started!

Conclusion

In conclusion, it’s important to take the time to engage in activities that bring us joy, especially if they help us tap into our creative sides. Creative activities can be a fun way to reduce stress and connect with ourselves at an emotional level. Whether you prefer coloring books, sketching and painting, trying a new craft or writing your thoughts down on paper – there are various ways you can get out of your comfort zone and start easing yourself into a self-care routine that fits your lifestyle.

What’s great about art is it requires no specific talent or skill level – just hard work and dedication! So don’t be afraid to take the plunge and explore your creativity through these activities. You never know what kind of magic and positivity it could bring into your life.
